Just about everyone has experienced depressed mood – when you just feel like nothing’s going your way, and you have a “terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.” For about 9% of women and 5% of men in the U.S., this dark cloud over your life becomes severe and persists for weeks, months, or even years. Also, for about 2% of women and 1% of men, this severe or a less severe form of depression persist for over two years. When depressed mood becomes severe or lasts like this, it can feel like nothing will help. But by facing depression enough to ask for help from a counselor, other therapist, psychiatrist, or doctor, you’ve already started to help yourself on the road out.
At Crocus Counseling, we use a variety of approaches to help you climb out of this dark rut, including behavioral activation, cognitive behavioral, and acceptance and commitment therapies. This is fancy psychology talk for supporting you in following through on actions (like social engagement and exercise) and new ways of interacting with your thoughts and emotions to get you back to living your life with purpose.
We also offer eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) treatment to help free you from traumatic memories that may be leading to your depression.
